Although he was born in Caracas, Venezuela, he has lived in Spain since 1980. He is currently living and working in Nogueroles del Molino. His works have been exhibited throughout Europe and the Americas. The original painting that made him famous was done in 1994-95 during a stay at the Hotel Diagonal Mar Barcelona. It featured the face of an unknown man with red pencilled eyebrows outlined on white paper against a black background. The look of the subject seems distant – a look that is always interpreted by the viewer as a distinction.The painting has since been reproduced as a wallpaper and has been used as an advertising poster. The origin of the portrait is unknown, although it is generally assumed that it was Gabarre who painted it after having taken a photograph of someone. He says he does not remember whether he took the photograph himself or received it from someone else. “I don’t know, I believe I took it and I cannot prove one way or another if not for this painting” says Gabarre. Julian Robledo was born in Caracas, Venezuela, on April 30, 1949. His father was a Basque from Bilbao named Robledo and his mother was from Navarra. Gabarre spent his childhood between Spain and Venezuela. In 1964 he went to live in Madrid with his parents. It is there that he studied for a degree in Spanish philology at the Complutense University of Madrid. In 1975, at the age of 26, Gabarre moved to Barcelona permanently and began to devote more time to painting and illustration as a hobby while staying with close friends who had some artistic knowledge as well as an interest in the arts . In those days he used acrylic paint . In 1978 he published his first poster, which was very successful and awarded a “prize A.T.L. ( Advertising and Propaganda Technical Association of Madrid ) . In 1981 he met the famous Spanish illustrator Sixta Valle who conducted him to her friends, artists such as Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró. During this period Gabarre began to travel with the paint box; Paris, Marrakech and Venice became his favorite destinations . In the Philippines Gabarre’s works have been exhibited in the internationally renowned Graphic Arts Center of the University of Santo Tomas. He was also chosen to participate in exhibits at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, the Cologne Kunstverein, Paris Musée des Arts Décoratifs and Madrid’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts. His unique style has earned him several prizes, including the Grand Prize in Caracas at the Festival Internacional de Guadalajara. He won national prizes for his paintings in Venezuela and Colombia , notably for his women's portraits. He has participated in many international retrospectives .
